J.R. Tolleson named Izard County head football coach

The Izard County School District has named Henderson State Director of Football Operations and Running Backs coach J.R. Telleson as head coach of the Cougars.

The announcement was made Wednesday night on social media:

We are pleased to announce that JR Tolleson is the new Cougars Head Football Coach! Coach Tolleson is currently the Running Backs Coach and Director of Football Operations at Henderson State University. This past season, Coach Tolleson helped the Reddies to their first playoff appearance since 2015. The Reddies had the No.1 passing offense in the conference and also had three of the top 15 running backs in the conference.

Izard County Athletic Director Kyle McCandlis said, “Coach Tolleson impressed us very much during the interview process with his football knowledge and his enthusiasm and passion to be the next Cougar Head Football Coach.”

Welcome to Cougar Nation, Coach Tolleson!

Tolleson also made a statement on social media, saying:

I am excited to announce that I will be the new Head Football Coach at The Izard County School District. I am very blessed with the opportunity that has been given to me.

I have loved my time at Henderson State and it has been a bittersweet week, I will forever be grateful for the opportunity Coach Scott Maxfield gave me. Allowing me to be apart of an incredible program and learn from one of the best coaches in all of college football.

I want to thank everyone who has been apart of this journey to today. First, my fiancé Bella Laughlin, she has supported this chaos non stop and always does it with a smile. You won’t hear anyone cheering louder than she will be on Friday nights.

I want to say a special thank you to (Heber Springs head football coach) Caleb Carmikle, I have said this before, he has been a coach, mentor and a best friend. I would not be in the position I am today if it was not for him and the opportunity he gave a young kid to learn how to coach ball. I could thank many more people and each of you know who you are.

To the Izard County Community, I am nothing less than grateful and excited to get started. We are going to put a product on the field each and everyone of you are proud of.
